Day 4 people...DAY 4!
So. 4 days seems like a marginal victory. For the first time since starting this thing I'm feeling a TEENY bit like it was a good decision. This whole day was another test of will. I'm happy to say that I passed the test (With a huge portion of God's help). So on with the recap.
Today started with a SWF. The first SWF of this cleanse was less "shock and awe" and more "gurgle and fizzle"...but it was a successful flush none the less, so I won't complain. I think I will make tomorrow's more salty...I live for shock and awe :)
Today was also another lemonade day. I took my requisite "8 portions" of lemonade today...not more. I don't have ANY idea why, but this time around the lemonade is horrendous tasting. I slam it down every time I have to drink it. The bare minimum that I should drink a day is 8 - 8 oz portions...I drink 8...period...and a TON of water.
An interesting trend is emerging this time around. As I settle into the meat of the cleanse I'm realizing that I'm fine between meals...happy even. But about 1 hour before a normal mealtime I get very very hungry and very very very surly and irritated. This didn't happen last time around. I don't like it at all. I feel like I've been taken over. As far as I can figure this is a mental mechanism that my body is torturing me with to get me to eat. In this I'm starting to find solace. This is EXACTLY why I'm doing the cleanse: To overcome the little voice in my brain that tells me "hey dude (my little voice is from the early '90s) you're stressed...EAT! or hey man, you're bored...EAT!". So as tortured as I feel and as mad as I feel, I'm oddly encouraged. I'm in a battle royale with bad habits and a bad way of thinking and, so far, I'm coming out on top.
So, the only thing left to do tonight is drink my herbal tea and hit the sack...looking forward to that. Day 5 looms...but not as bad as day 4 did :)
PS. To my loyal contingent of wonderful and super good looking Canadian women: Sincere apologies for missing a day. To be honest, it was good that I didn't post on day 2...because it wouldn't have been very nice :)

days 2 and 3
Writer: Aaron
What I'm listening to this second: Safety Dance: Men Without Hats (what an awesome vid)
Day 2
Not much to post on day 2. I Juiced. I smoothied...I headached. I bellyached. I'm so done...Why am I doing this again? I did discover the joy of smoothies though. Mango + Banana + Strawberry + OJ + Blender = awesome...definitely something I will do going forward
Day 3
For day 3, Dad and I are speeding up the process a bit. we are cutting out the 3rd day of ease-in and skipping straight to lemonade. I did the same last time with no ill effects. We'll see what happens.
The Lemonade
Every day for the next ten involves drinking a mixture of 2 tbsp lemon juice, 2 tbsp maple syrup, 1/10 tsp cayenne pepper, and 4 oz water at least 8 times a day...It is kinda brutal after a while, but it could be so much worse. Every evening we drink herbal tea (peppermint) and every morning we do our awesome Salt Water Flush (SWF). The SWF involves drinking 1 liter of salt water...waiting 10 minutes...then "flushing"...It's kinda wild. Without too much gory detail, I'll explain. The body can't process salt water the way it would normal liquid. It won't digest it. So it "moves it through" the other fastest way possible. And it works FAST.
So far I have had my lemonade...and my tea...now the flush (tomorrow @ 5:30am). I'm strangely excited. The flushing is the part that makes you feel like you're doing some good. Wish me luck!
As a final note. I have to give thanks for my wonderful, beautiful, caring, understanding wife who has put up with me as I storm around being an absolute crank and muttering things to myself. She is my angel. I couldn't do anything without her.

CAFFEINE...WITHDRAWL
Writer: Aaron (aka OWWW...MY HEAD....grrrrr...why am I doing this again?)
What I'm listening to this second: Defying Gravity: "Wicked" Soundtrack
Monday night. One day down. These first 3 days are the worst part and I have officially begun the tough part. Full-on Caffeine Withdrawl has set in...pounding headache...slight nausea...exhaustion. Overall it's good times :)
Today's Events
Today, as I told you all before, was "Living Foods" day. I had alot of good stuff today. Zucchini, Mushrooms, Broccoli, Red Pepper, Tomato, Onion, etc...were all on the menu. I also did a test run on a smoothie today. It was Strawberry, Banana, Mango, OJ...It was good.
I'm not going to lie though, These first days are somewhat physically taxing...but that is NOTHING compared to the mental taxation. Quite possibly the most important part of the cleanse is overcoming the mental hurdle of "I eat food when I want to". Thats the stage I find myself at right now...I want good food. I don't need it. I want it. This mental war will go on, to some degree, throughout the entire cleanse but is never stronger than it is these first 2-3 days.
All that said, I did not bend or break...Day one: Check
Tomorrow's Plan
Tomorrow is liquid day 1. I can intake any fresh fruit I want...only it has to be in liquid form. Pure OJ, Smoothies, etc...All viable options. Doesn't sound too bad on the surface, but when you add the headache/nausea...it can be a bit brutal. Last time I cleansed, day two was the worst day.
I'll be sure to let you know how it went. In the meantime, pray for me :)
OH...PS. I do have a fellow glutton-for-punishment in all of this: My dad. That's right...It's Vonk men teaming together in an unwavering quest for cleansed insides and dominion over the urge to snack :)
See you all on the flip side!

Master cleanse part deux
Writer: Aaron (aka "Dad" or "dadadada") What I'm listening to this second: "Faithfully" by Journey (shut up)
Well, It's Sunday night...Right on the verge of another week. 11:30 to be precise
This means it is T-minus 30 minutes until I officially begin my second "Master Cleanse"
For those of you who don't know, I successfully accomplished a "9 day" cleanse at the beginning of this year. It was a great success! Before I get too far ahead of myself though, let me give you a summary of the Master Cleanse. Who knows, maybe you'll want to join in :).
The Master Cleanse (aka "The who-in-their-right-mind would do that" Cleanse)
The Master Cleanse is a (relatively) popular digestive cleanse that is often also called "The Lemonade Diet". It consists of a 3 day "ease-in" period where you prepare yourself for the cleanse, a 7-14 day cleanse period, and a 3 day "ease-out" period where you prepare your body for food again. Since there are a few different variations/lengths of cleanse I'll just tell you what my game plan is each day. If at any point you feel compelled to say "you're crazy/nuts/stupid"...get it out of your system. I know I am :).
Day 1...Tomorrow...I can still back out can't I?
Tomorrow is "Living Foods" day. I can only eat fresh fruits and veggies. They can be "prepared" any way I'd like, just no canned or "preserved" produce. To be honest, this day doesn't intimidate me. It still involves solid foods, and I like fresh fruits and veggies. It's the next 14 days on liquid only that intimidate me...And I've done this before.
You heard me right...14 days of liquid...but I won't get too far ahead of myself.
I'll let you all know tomorrow how the day went and what day 2 holds.
Cheers everyone!

There's a first time for everything...
Well, I never thought I'd be starting a blog. But, it seems like a good place to write little stories from our day-to-day lives for friends and family to read.
Our boys keep us busy. I don't think they could be more different. It's fun to watch them grow and change.
Zachary is our almost 3 year old... very busy and shares every little thought that pops into his head. He is convinced that every time he sleeps he is growing. Yesterday, he told me "only my arm will grow this naptime."
Oliver is about 16 months now. He's our soft-hearted boy. Many things make him nervous, the list is quite long. But, he is sweet and snuggly and very much a Momma's boy (which I'll enjoy for as long as I can). We're hoping we can get him used to beaches and sprinklers, so we can enjoy lots of hot summer days at the beach. He's learning more words every day... the latest is "go, go gooooo!", mostly said when Zachy is a little to close to a toy he wants.
Brothers always and forever!
